But unfortunately, the problem with rough play with dogs is, while it can be a good experience, you have to be aware of what is happening at all times and what typically happens. What I run into typically with people who play rough with their dogs is they get very involved in the game, and they only stop the game when they don't like what's happening. And what happens is a lot of times they miss out, not only on whether or not the dog is now getting past the place of being able to control their impulses, but they also sometimes play in a way, in a manner that's rough, and they start to kind of scare the dog a little bit.

Advocating For Your Dog

When we choose to be caretakers of animals we make a contract with them. That contract says you will not put your dog into an uncomfortable/unnecessary situation. What we mean by that is if we are in public with our dogs and somebody wants to pet or interact with your dog, it is your duty to know your dog well enough, and read your dog’s body language to determine if he is comfortable with the person and wants to be petted.
