Mini Pig Training for Potbelly

HELP YOUR PIG BECOME YOUR PERFECT PET

Teach your pig to behave in ways that fit with your family and suit your lifestyle

You cherish your relationship with your pig.  Your pet is funny and affectionate, smart and sensitive.  And you want to do right by your pig.

Pigs can be wonderful pets, but sometimes there are just a couple of problematic behaviors that keep your pig from being the ideal family member.

Pigs are not easy, and they are not dogs.  There are differences with pigs that need to be taken into account when training.  For example, while dogs are predatory in nature, pigs are prey animals, more sensitive to crowding and personal space infringement, which can make them behave aggressively.  In addition, pigs are naturally neophobic, so they tend to be leery of anything or anyone new in their environment. These qualities can lead pigs to be less accepting of changes in their environment, fearful of being harnessed, leashed or crated, and cautious of unfamiliar places or people.

Imagine…

- your pig being potty trained

- being able to harness your pig and walk them on a leash

- having your pig readily enter a crate or walk up a ramp into the car

- your pig standing on a mat and holding still while you care for them or for a vet exam

- your pig waiting patiently for their food dish without being pushy or noisy

- your pig accepting visitors into your home

- having a pet sitter able to take care of your pig when you are away

- creating a better relationship with your pig

If these are your goals …
I can help you.

Private Mini Pig Consultation with a Professional Pet Pig Trainer

Although the methods of training most species of pets are similar, pig training requires a very different approach, keeping the animal’s unique needs, instincts and behaviors in mind. Otherwise, it’s all too easy to end up with a squealing, biting, peeing, out-of-control pet pig.

Laura has been training pigs since 1989 and has given seminars on the training and behavior of pigs and how to enjoy a positive relationship with them. Using positive, humane, highly effective techniques, Laura can help bring peace to your household whether you have a new pig or one who has been a member of the family for a long time.

Laura offers private pig training sessions in the comfort of your own home, or anywhere in the world via webcam. She can address ongoing behavioral issues, or prevent them before they occur. You will receive personal, one-on-one attention at times that work for you. Each lesson is customized specifically to your needs, focusing on the areas where you feel you need the most help.

Teach Your Mini Pig to Hold Still

I put together this introductory video for teaching your pig to hold still. Holding still not only helps with putting on a harness, but in the long run, you can use it as the basis for cooperative care during vet visits. It is the stepping stone to teaching what is called a "start button behavior".

A start button behavior is where your pig knows what is about to happen and indicates they are ready for it by doing a particular behavior. An example would be a chin rest or continued contact with a target.

Toward the end of the video, you see Fidget and a needle. He knows what it is and indicates he is ready for me to touch him with it. Having a pig that cooperates with you is much less stressful than struggling with them. Giving a pig the power to choose what happens to them, and them knowing you will stop if needed, means they are more likely to continue. It is how zookeepers get animals to lean into a needle for a shot, hold still for a blood draw, hold their mouths open for dental care, and present their feet for hoof/nail trims.

The most important reinforcer for any animal, including humans, is knowing what comes next. So rather than restrain or try to trick our pigs into doing things they don't like, we can give them power over what happens to them.

Happy training!
