The Sam Simon Foundation offers free spay/neuter and non-orthopedic surgeries for low income families. They also have a hearing dog program to train assistance dogs for the hearing impaired, as well as rescuing dogs. They are a wonderful local resource for those in need, both of the 2 and 4 legged kind.
There is a heated discussion going on among Los Angeles City Council members regarding whether or not to increase the pet limit for L.A. residents. Currently, the limit is 3 dogs/cats, but the new Head of the Department of Animal Services and 2 City Council members want to increase that number to five.
The California Veterinary Medical Board is trying to prevent anyone other than a veterinarian from performing any type of rehab therapy for our pets. This includes swim therapy, chiropractic, laser therapy, underwater treadmill, and other therapeutic modalities. Most vets don't know about therapy and are happy to refer to someone who does. Most vets don't want to go back to school to take courses on rehab therapy. This means that it will be much more difficult to find someone to help our pets when they need it the most!!!
My heartfelt condolences go out to Mathilde DeCagny on the loss of Enzo, their 16 year old Jack Russell Terrier. Enzo's father was Moose, who played Eddie for many years on the famed television sitcom Frasier. Mathilde used Enzo to play Eddie for the last few years of the show after she retired Moose. Both dogs played "Skip" in the movie "My Dog Skip", starring Frankie Muniz. Enzo was young Skip, and Moose was old Skip. Moose passed away in 2006 at almost 16 years of age.
I have a client from a few years ago who is a very nice woman and is now a friend. She hired me when she got a cocker spaniel/poodle mix from a local pet store. I refuse to call it a breed, because it isn't, it's a mix. I have absolutely no issue with mixed breeds as most of mine have been mixes. What I do have a problem with is people purposely breeding 2 different breeds to make mixes and then selling them for exorbitant amounts of money and calling them "designer" dogs. Especially when there are so many perfectly great mixes, and purebreds I might add, sitting in the shelters being euthanized every day. Sorry for the rant, I'll get back to my story now.
