Pawscasts #42 & #43: “Mathilde DeCagny Interview”

Part 1: (27:49)

Part 2: (28:47)

Mathilde DeCagny was the trainer for the beloved dog Eddie on the long running hit TV sitcom, Frasier.  Although her credits are too numerous to list here, some of her better movie jobs have included: Marley & Me, Hotel for Dogs, My Dog Skip, Homeward Bound and As Good as it Gets, just to name a few.  Mathilde spent an afternoon with us and shared some wonderful stories and insights into the world of the movie star dogs (and the dog trainers who make them shine.)
She also gave us some insight as to how some lucky dogs (and other animals) go from ”pound puppy”  to “famous face” (and tail) when Hollywood (or at least Mathilde) goes looking for the next promising new animal actor.  She also talked about the dogs she worked with for the upcoming movie, “Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2.”
We’ve posted both of these recordings together so you can listen to the entire interview if you would like.  We hope you enjoy listening to Mathilde as much as we did.  2/2/10

Pawscast #44:  “Playing Rough with Your Dog” (21:58)

Playing rough with your dog can be a lot of fun.  Pushing on him, playing “slappy head”, encouraging him to jump up.  All of these are things that we tend to want to do with puppies, but what happens when the puppy gets bigger?  It isn’t much fun anymore.  Then we try to stop the behavior we created, encouraged and reinforced.  In today’s podcast we discuss the downfalls of rough play with your dog.  2/9/10

Pawscast #45: “How to Play Tug” (32:53)

Playing tug with your dog…is it a good idea or not?  Some trainers are against it, while others use it for teaching.  Both opinions probably have their roots in the same issue:  If you do it correctly, you can teach your dog some valuable lessons, but if you do it incorrectly, it can reinforce rough and sometimes troublesome behavior.  We break this issue down, to illustrate the “rules” to follow if you choose to play tug with your dog.  2/12/10

Pawscast #46:  “Getting Your Dog To Play” (31:03)

Last week we discussed the rules for the game of “tug”.  But what if your pooch doesn’t play?  What then?  Why is it important that your dog learn to play with you?  Well, it’s important to have many different ways in which to reward your dog.  The more variety you have as types of reinforcement the more options you have in training.  Today we talk about ways to get a dog to play with toys.  We hope you find it helpful!

Pawscast #47:  “Dealing with those ‘Oh No!’ situations” (31:25)

Running into a loose dog when your walking your dog, or dealing with coming face to face with something your dog reacts negatively to…these can be very confusing moments when you don’t know how to handle them.  We give you some ideas for dealing with the unexpected, and some suggestions for how to keep your cool when you do.  We don’t guarantee we can give you the perfect solutions, but this podcast is sure to start you thinking about how to plan for the unexpected. One thing we didn’t mention in the off-leash dog scenario is to toss a bunch of treats on the ground in front of the loose dog so you and your dog can make a getaway.  2/19/10

Pawscast #48:  “Impulse Control” (28:54)

We have mentioned the term “impulse control” in many podcasts but what does it mean?  Is a dog born with it or is it something you can teach?  Hopefully the information in this podcast will help you to understand what it is, why it’s important, and how you can improve your own dog’s impulse control.  2/26/10

Pawscast #49: “Dogs and Cats” (34:05)

So what do you do when you have a cat and want to bring a dog home?  Or maybe the other way around?  In today’s show we discuss introducing dogs and cats, as well as what to look for in their behavior to help the introduction and future living situation as easy as possible.
